How to Make Citronella Candles for Mosquito Repellent

Avoid itchy mosquito bites by placing a citronella candle near where you plan to sit outside.

Mosquitoes are not only annoying, they also can carry diseases such as malaria and West Nile virus. One natural way to repel mosquitoes and other bothersome insects is by using citronella, whether in candle or plant form. The odor of the citronella confuses mosquitoes and makes it difficult for them to find someone to feed on, so they stay away from the areas where the citronella smells strongly. Citronella candles can be purchased from any hardware store, or you can make your own at home.

Things You'll Need

• Paraffin or wax
• Citronella oil
• Wick
• Candleholder

Instructions

1. Melt the paraffin or wax in a double boiler. A double boiler can be set up by filling a large pot with a small amount of water and placing a metal mixing bowl inside the pot. The bottom of the mixing bowl should not be submerged in water.

2. Add citronella oil to the melted wax. For each pound of wax used, add 1.5 oz. of citronella oil. Do not use the type of oil made to be burned in an outdoor torch. Use only the pure citronella essential oil.

3. Stir the wax and citronella oil mixture with a wooden spoon.

4. Pour the wax mixture into candleholder until no mixture remains.

5. Place the wick into the hot wax, taking care not to burn yourself. The wick should be centered in the candleholder. Leave 1 inch of wick above the wax to make it easy to light.

6. Leave the candle to harden for at least 24 hours before attempting to light it.

Tips & Warnings

• Be careful when working with hot wax, as it is easy to burn yourself.
