How to Make Rubber Mulch
Rubber mulch is a popular alternative to organic mulches, particularly for use on playgrounds. The elasticity and permanence of rubber makes it safer and more durable than gravel or wood chip mulch in this capacity. Beyond the playground, many homeowners are turning to rubber mulch in the garden and yard because it lasts much longer than organic kinds. It is possible to make your own rubber mulch if you have the right tools and supplies for the job. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Collect old tires. These can probably be obtained at minimal cost from a junkyard, or you may know someone who has them laying around. You don't have to worry about the condition of the tires because they will ultimately be shredded. Try to find as many as possible that have not been steel belted.

2
Remove the steel belting from the tires if you have been unable to obtain enough without this treatment. The most tedious task in making rubber mulch, use your pliers and chisel to separate the rubber from the steel. Wear gloves during this process to protect yourself as the steel can cut.

3
Shred the steel-free rubber using a powerful shredder. Check the owner's manual on any shredder before use to make sure the machine is designed to handle rubber. Since it is unlikely for anyone to own an industrial grade shredder, consider contacting a local rental shop to see if they have a chipper or shredder that is capable of doing the job.

4
Paint the rubber mulch if desired. Your local paint store should have a paint suitable for use on rubber. The best way to apply the paint will be with a sprayer. If a sprayer is not available, stir the paint and mulch together in a clean wheel barrow. Dry on a tarp to keep paint from leaching into the soil.
