How to Counter Water Retention With Herbs
Water retention, or edema, is a condition that is marked by a swelling, or "bloating," of extremities-- most often feet, ankles, abdomen and hands. It can be attributed to many conditions, including heart or kidney problems, poor circulation or pressure on a vein, or dietary or hormonal changes (such as menstruation or pregnancy). The blood is unable to move the water to the kidneys to be expelled. Many herbs act as a diuretic--something to help the kidneys flush out the excess water--and can counter water retention.

Consider dandelion. According to Michael DiPalma, N.D., dandelion is a strong diuretic that helps to replace and regulate potassium levels. An imbalance of potassium levels can lead to further water retention. Take dandelion leaves (from a yard free from chemicals or purchased at the grocery store as a salad green) or root as a strong-brewed tea to relieve water retention.

Take grape seed extract. Some research shows that grape seed extract is effective at relieving water retention due to poor circulation by strengthening veins. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests a dose of 360 mg of grape seed extract twice daily.

Try bilberry extract. Like grape seed extract, bilberry extract is believed to strengthen veins to allow the proper removal of fluid. Bilberry is effective in many forms including as berries, a strong tea or caplets containing the extract.
