How to Convert Vinyl LP to Digital File Format

Many music lovers who own vinyl LPs are proud of their collections. While it's true that vinyl offers a different sound quality than digital formats---analog recording and playback devices are said to produce a distinctively "warmer" tone---no one can deny the convenience and superior archiving capability of digital files. Digital archiving preserves an aging vinyl LP and allows the listener to enjoy formerly non-portable recordings anywhere. LP-to-digital conversion is not difficult, but since records must be transferred in real time, the long sessions can be arduous.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the record player's left and right RCA male phone plugs into the two RCA female jacks on the adapter cable.

    • 2

Plug the adapter cable's ...-inch plug into the computer's audio or microphone input.

    • 3

Get analog-to-digital recording software, such as WavePad (see Resources). Open it on your computer. Follow the instructions for recommended input levels and for choosing a WAV or MP3 digital file format.

    • 4

Make a test recording to check input levels for distortion and adequate volume.

    • 5

Record songs one at a time to limit the digital file size and for easier titling and organization.

    • 6

Use a music management software program, such as iTunes or Windows Media Player, to organize files, burn CDs and transfer files to portable devices.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always start with low recording-input levels to avoid distortion. Adjust them as needed.
