How to Modify a Computer Power Supply
Windows XP allows you to set a number of power options including the power scheme to use, when to turn off the monitor automatically, turn off the hard disk automatically and put the system on a standby. You can also use power buttons on your keyboard to access some of these features. An uninterruptible power supply, or UPS, can also be configured to sound an alarm when the battery is low and to do a defined set of tasks.

Go to "Start," and click on "Control Panel."

Double-click on the "Power Options" icon.

Click and select the power scheme suitable to you from the "Power Scheme" drop-down box.

Click on the drop-down box next to "Turn off monitor" and select after how many hours you want the computer monitor to be automatically turned off.

Click on the drop-down box next to "Turn off hard disk" and select after how many hours you want the computer hard disk to be automatically turned off.

Click on the drop-down box next to "System standby" and select after how many hours you want the computer to go into the stand by mode.

Click on the "Advanced" tab and then select what you want Windows XP to do when you press the Power button from the "When I press the power button on my computer" drop-down box.

Select what you want Windows XP to do when you press the Sleep button from the "When I press the sleep button on my computer" drop-down box.

Click on the "UPS" tab and then click on the "Select" button to select your UPS.

Click and select a manufacturer in the 'UPS Selection' dialog box.

Select your UPS model and the port on which it is connected, and then click on "Next."

Select your 'UPS Signal Polarity' and then click on "Finish." For further assistance, refer to your UPS user's manual.

Click on the "Configure" button.

Click to select the "Enable all notifications" check box.

Click to select the "Minutes on battery before critical alarm" check box and then adjust the seconds in the adjoining box.

Click to select the "When the alarm occurs, run this program" check box.

Click on the "Configure" button.

Click on the "Browse" button, select the program that you want to be run and then click on "OK."
