1
Open the cabinet doors under the kitchen sink and place a bucket under the sink trap. The sink trap connects to the tailpiece coming from the sink drain basket and to the drain pipe going to the wall drain.
-
2
Position the bucket under the connection between the wall drain pipe and the sink trap. Loosen the slip-joint nut that connects the sink trap to the drain pipe with a pipe wrench. Unscrew the slip-joint nut by hand to disconnect the two pipes. Residual water will come out of the drain pipe and the sink trap. The bucket will catch the water and keep the water from spilling onto the bottom of the sink cabinet.

Loosen the slip-joint nut connecting the tailpiece to the bottom of the sink drain basket. Pull the tailpiece off of the basket and set it aside. Clean any old plumbers tape off of the sink drain basket threads with a soft cloth. The threads will have to be cleaned for any new plumbing and doing the cleaning now while the plumbers tape is moist makes the job easier.
