Collect all information for your family tree, including photos for your pictogram. You want to make sure there are no gaps in your information before you start charting the family tree diagram. You may want to make a rough sketch on paper first to make sure you have enough space for the entire family tree.

Use a ruler and pencil to draw out the diagram onto the paper or poster board you have intended for the finished project. Try to choose an acid-free paper to protect the pictogram images you will glue on later.

Once you are satisfied with your final design, retrace the pencil diagram with a marker or art pen to make the lines permanent and to darken the lines.

Fill in the blanks of your family tree with a marker or calligraphy pen.

Use photo-safe, acid-free photo glue to attach the photos of family members onto the paper. Keep the photos close to the corresponding names on the family tree diagram. Rewrite the names under the photographs or draw arrows to distinguish photographs if necessary.

To make photos smaller and easier to place on the pictogram family tree, use a scanner, a computer, photo editing software and a printer to cut smaller photos of just the family member's face.
It's not necessary to make all the photos on your pictogram the same size. Photos of various sizes can add character to your family tree diagram.
