How to Spread Buffel Grass Seed

Buffelgrass can become a fire hazard if you live in a poorly irrigated climate, which more than likely means you live in a warmer climate. Buffelgrass, however, can be a beautiful addition to your landscaping and can bring height, depth and inflorescence beauty. It can also be grown as a high quality hay.       Pour buffelgrass into a fertilizer spreader. You will need about 3.75 lbs of buffelgrass seed per acre if you are planning a hay field. If you are planting the buffelgrass as a part of the landscaping, you can just toss a handful into the spot of your choice, and move onto Step 3.

      Walk the spreader to dispense the seed onto the ground. Make sure that when you are using the spreader, you stay on the wheel tracks that the previous pass made to ensure even coverage.

      Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, about 1/4 to 3/4 of an inch.

      Water as needed, but buffelgrass is hardy and doesn't need a lot of watering. A light sprinkling on hot days is enough.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plant buffelgrass in the spring or fall.

  • Do not harvest buffelgrass before it has matured, which is when it drops its seed for the first time.
