How to Cut Linings for Cafe Curtains

Lining your cafe curtains can create a neat and regular appearance from the outside of your home, as well as providing additional privacy and light control. Lined curtains hang well and have a bit more body than unlined curtains and may allow you to use lighter or more delicate fabrics. Cafe curtain linings do not have to be expensive, as simple cotton muslin works quite nicely. You can line your curtains when you make them, or cut linings for cafe curtains that you have purchased or already made and sew these into place.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a washable, light- to medium-weight fabric like cotton muslin for your cafe curtain lining. Wash and dry your lining fabric.

    • 2

Press and then measure your finished cafe curtains or determine your desired curtain measurement if you are lining cafe curtains as you make them. Note down these measurements.

    • 3

Add two inches to your desired finished width measurement. Allow two inches in length for the bottom hem, and approximately 3 inches at the top edge for a casing. Adjust the top casing allowance to allow a doubled 1/4 inch hem if you will be stitching the top of your cafe curtain lining directly to a finished curtain.

    • 4

Snip into the selvedge edge of your lining fabric and tear across the width of the fabric to square the grain or cut, being careful to keep the cut quite straight and on grain.

    • 5

Measure and mark your cafe curtain lining fabric. Tear or cut to size, then press well. .

Tips & Warnings

  • Line your cafe curtains faster when you make them by simply cutting the lining panels to the same size as the outer panels. Sew right sides together, then turn and fold over the casing.
