How to Tighten Dentures

Dentures are an effective solution for those that need teeth in order to eat and communicate. Dentures can also provide an aesthetic confidence to those that may be self conscious about missing teeth. When dentures become subject to wear and tear however, they can lose their grip and become persistently loose. With the right dental procedures or products, you can tighten your dentures and wear them with less anxiety.

Instructions

    • 1

Use an adhesive gel to create a better grip between dentures and gums. Apply the gel into the deepest part of the denture and around the edges and inside the upper part of the denture. Experiment with different types and brands to choose a product that will work best.

    • 2

Apply denture powders, which are less messy and easier to work with than adhesive gels. Before applying powder, wet the insides of the dentures first. Shake off any excess water. Sprinkle the powder adhesive onto denture and insert denture into mouth.

    • 3

Consider talking to your doctor about denture suction cups. When the alveolus, or the bone that holds the teeth in place disintegrates (due to aging and prolonged denture wear), dentures can become permanently loose. A dentist can line dentures with a layer of suction cup so that the dentures firmly grip the alveolus to create a snugger, tighter grip.

For individuals with disintegrated alveolus, another effective procedure is to allow a dentist to add a pair of air valves to the dentures. When the oxygen is sucked out of the valves, it creates a stronger grip that permanently tightens loose dentures.

    • 5

Get a dental implant. Dental implants are permanent dentures that cannot be removed without a dentist. These implants snap into a patient's jaws and can be the most secure and permanent form of dentures on the market.
