How to Change the Folder Name on My Documents

The "My Documents" folder is one of the earliest special folders that made its debut on Windows 95 and has been primarily used for storing all kinds of personal files. However, the name can be misleading, as it is physically possible to store more than just mere documents. The special folder functions are the same as in other folders, so adding audio files, pictures, videos and other file types is possible. Changing the folder name into something more meaningful could make the folder stand out more.

You can also change the name by repeating Step 1 and clicking the "General" tab where you can edit the "My Documents" text in the text box. An even shorter way to rename a folder is by right-clicking on "My Documents" in the start menu and clicking "Rename."

Tips & Warnings

  • 1. If you cannot find the "My Documents" in the "Start" menu, it may be hidden because of the "Start" menu settings. Check first on the desktop to see if an icon is present and apply the steps there. If not, right-click on the taskbar and select "Properties." Click the "Start Menu" tab and then the "Customize" button. Click the "Advanced" tab and under the "Start menu items" list box, look for "My Documents." Set the option to "Display as a link" or "Display as a menu."

  • 2. The "My Documents" may also not be visible if you are using the "Classic Menu." If the "My Documents" link is missing in the desktop, right-click on the taskbar, select "Properties," and click the "Start Menu" tab. Select the "Start Menu" option and click "OK." Apply the previous tip if necessary and repeat the steps.

  • 3. If you wish to rename the folder from the desktop and the icon is not there, right-click on the desktop and select "Properties." Click the "Desktop" tab and select "Customize Desktop." Check the "My Documents" check box and click "OK" on every dialog. Look for the "My Documents" icon on the desktop and perform the same operations in Step 1.
