How to Become a Beer Distributor

Beer distributors sell beer to retailers around the country and around the world. The retailer buying the beer must possess a liquor license prior to purchasing. Becoming a beer distributor can be hard work, but it can be rewarding. It is possible to make your own beer to sell or to sell beer from various companies. The government regulates the way beer distributors sell beer, so following the government's rules and regulations is extremely important.       Submit Form SS-4 to apply for an Employer Identification Number with the IRS. You need this number before applying for a permit to become a distributor. Contact the Internal Revenue Service for the form, or visit the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau website.

      Apply for the basic permit to be a distributor on the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau website.

      Fill out the power of attorney form located on the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau website if the permit application was signed by someone else other than the individual listed on Item 9. The "Owner's Information" (prospective distributor) is placed in Item 9 on the basic permit form.

      Fill out the personnel questionnaire on the website if you are a citizen of a foreign country, have lived in a foreign country for more than two years, or have any association with a foreign country.

      Join a trade association to connect with producers and importers in the alcohol industry. Trade associations, such as International Beverage Network and National Beer Wholesaler's Association, allow you to network with other professionals in the alcohol industry. Becoming a member of the National Beer Wholesaler's Association helps you gain contacts in the industry and form relationships with beer suppliers.
