How to Use Excel Worksheets
Microsoft's Excel application is a worksheet program that allows you to input data in a ledger format so you can create analysis tools, such as tables and charts, and use the information for business and personal projects. For example, you can create a budget tracker to keep track of finances at work, or a meal planner to organize the groceries for your household.

Launch the Microsoft Excel application and create a new worksheet by clicking on "New" under the "File" menu. Additionally, activate the "Standard" and "Formatting" toolbars that are regularly used with a worksheet. Click on the "View" menu item; from the drop-down menu, go to "Toolbars" and click "Standard," then "View," "Toolbars" and "Formatting."

Type in a header and footer by clicking on "Header and Footer" under the "View" menu. Use the text fields in the dialog box to add a title, such as "Dept. 7357 Budget Tracker," and footer, such as "Page 1" or "Confidential." Click "OK" when done.

Enter your data. Repeating the process in Step 3, double-click and add your content under the appropriate heading.

Format your tabular data by using the "Formatting Palette." For example, enhance cells with a background color by clicking the "Fill Color" tool under the "Borders and Shading" section and format text by assigning a size, font and color by using the drop-down menus and buttons under the "Font" section. You can adjust cell sizes by clicking and dragging the line boundaries in the horizontal letter and vertical number column and row headings.

Name and save your worksheet. Click the "Save" icon in the "Standard" menu to bring up the dialog box and enter a name for your work. When finished, click the "Save" button.
