Measure the area of your deck with a tape measure. This will help you to buy the appropriate amount of stain or paint you will need to coat the deck thoroughly. Manufacturers print the amount of area that the container of paint will coat on the side of the container or can. Keep in mind that at least two coats are necessary for a properly painted or stained deck.

Use a paint roller with a long reaching handle to roll the paint or stain onto the deck. Some stains require a sponge like roller to ensure quality of absorption into the wood. Consult the stain manufacturers instructions for proper application.

Roll the paint or stain evenly over the entire surface of the deck ensuring not to cross over previous strokes making unwanted lines in the paint or stain. Use horizontal or vertical strokes evenly side-by-side.

Allow the deck to dry thoroughly for 24 hours, then apply the second coat ensuring to cover up any missed spots or blemishes from the previous coat. Allow it to dry for another 24 hours.

Apply an outdoor weather sealant such as a water seal or a polyurethane coating over the entire surface of the deck. This will seal in the stain or paint and prevent weathering. You may want to add a second coat for better protection.
