How to Attach RV Roof Carriers

Roof racks can be installed on the top of an RV to use as an additional storage area when camping or traveling to your destination. Most common is the adjustable RV rack made out of aluminum. This type of rack typically installs directly to side rails pre-installed on the roof. Install an RV roof rack by first determining the size you need.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Unpack the roof rack kit and organize all of the parts. Find the mounting brackets, because those will be installed first.

  2. Step 2

Place mounting brackets into the side rails on the roof. The mounting brackets should easily snap or attach to the side rails.

  3. Step 3

Align the brackets evenly along the length of the roof by using a tape measure. Make sure the brackets are placed an even distance apart. The brackets should be able to slide along the side rails if needed.

  4. Step 4

Insert the roof rack tubing into the mounting rings. Adjust the mounting brackets, if necessary, to make sure the tubing is fitting correctly.

  5. Step 5

Secure the mounting brackets in the desired location with a screwdriver or power drill. A screw or bolt should be at the base of the bracket; tighten it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Aluminum tubing can be easily cut with a hacksaw if it needs to be trimmed.
  • Brackets that are not secured correctly can cause the roof rack system to fail if a heavy load is attached.
  • If your RV does not have side rails, you may need to have a professional install the roof rack.
