Auto wraps can turn an entire car into a mobile marketing message. The vinyl wraps are such good advertising that some companies will even pay consumers for the rights to place a colorful wrap on a personal vehicle. The wraps are designed for long term use, but eventually they may have to come off. There's a way to do it without causing damage to the car paint.
Things You'll Need
- Heat gun
- Citrus cleaner or paint thinner
Clean the wrap thoroughly to remove any dirt or grime.
Heat one corner of the vinyl panel until it begins to separate from the vehicle. Keep the gun moving, heating slowly across the entire area. This will prevent the paint underneath from being damaged.
Pull the wrap away slowly as it begins to separate from the vehicle. Continue working your way down the panel with the heat gun and pull the wrap away in sections.
Repeat the process with each panel until the entire wrap is removed. It should come off in fairly large sheets.
Wipe off any adhesive residue immediately with the citrus cleaner or paint thinner. If using paint thinner, use small amounts on a rag, and wipe the area dry afterward to avoid damaging the paint.
Tips & Warnings
- If you use paint thinner (step 5), wash and wax the area immediately after it dries to further preserve your paint job.
- Dispose of the vinyl wrap after removal. They are not reusable.
