How to Replace a Power Door Lock Actuator on a Dodge Caravan

by Nichole Liandi

Power door locks are a nice convenience to have in your car. But if the motor that operates the lock, known as an actuator, quits working, your convenience quickly becomes a liability. Replacing a power door lock actuator on a Dodge Caravan isn't a very difficult job. With the right replacement part and a little work taking off the door panel, it's a job that the average person can do in under an hour.

Step 1

Remove the door panel. Pry out the screw cover on the door release handle and take out the screw. Pry out the screw cover in the door pull cup and remove the screw. Remove the screw at the lower front of the door panel. Pry around the bottom and sides of the door panel with a panel tool to release the retaining clips. Lift the door panel off.

Step 2

Unplug the wiring connections to the actuator. Lift the clip holding the plug in place and slide the connectors apart to remove it.

Step 3

Undo the linkage connecting the actuator to the lock, and remove the screws holding the actuator in place. Take it out of the door.

Step 4

Connect the wiring plug to the new actuator and test its operation. Mount the actuator in place and connect the linkage (see Resources).

Step 5

Replace the door panel, reversing your previous steps to do so.
