How to Make Your Own Decorative Room Divider

Save

A room divider can provide privacy, hide those less-than-desirable parts of a room and add character to a plain room. A well-placed room divider can section off a bathroom, hide an overflowing laundry basket or conceal the cat's litter box. Choose wallpaper for the screen to suit your decor or start a new theme based on your new, snazzy screen. This simple and inexpensive divider will have your room sectioned off in just a couple of hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Three 12 inch x 72 inch pieces of plywood
  • Decorative hinges
  • Decorative wallpaper
  • Wallpaper paste
  • Wallpaper brush
  • Six decorative hinges with screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Wallpaper the three plywood panels individually. Make the paste according to the manufacturer's instructions for bare wood. Paper the panels and trim to size.

  • Place two of the panels next to each other, flat on the floor. Make sure they are lined up exactly, with their long sides touching.

  • Place one hinge in place at the top, one in the middle and one in the center. The top and bottom hinges should be an inch away from the top and bottom edges of the papered plywood. Mark where the holes are with a pencil, then pre-drill the holes.

  • Screw the hinges into place.

  • Flip the two pieces of plywood over, so that the hinges are on the underside.

  • Line up the third panel. Repeat Steps 3 and 4.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a high quality wallpaper paste designed for sticking paper to wood.
  • Mark the screw holes carefully before pre-drilling the holes to avoid the holes being out of alignment.
