How to Refinish a Rattan Chair

Are you tired of the color or finish on your rattan chairs? You don't have to live with furniture you don't love. Rattan and wicker are fairly easy to refinish with just a little paint. Be sure to take this project outside. Spray paint tends to travel and can easily float across a room, ruining everything in its path.

Things You'll Need

  • Drop cloth
  • Soap and water
  • Sand paper
  • Damp rags
  • Spray paint
  • Fine-tip paintbrush
  • Move your rattan chair outside onto a drop cloth, setting it down on four legs. Cover any nearby surfaces that you don't want ruined with spray paint.

  • Clean the chair using mild soap and water. Remove any residue from the chair and allow it to dry completely.

  • Sand the chair using a medium grit sandpaper. Sand just enough to create some texture on the surface that will allow the paint to adhere.

  • Remove sanding dust with damp rags and allow the chair to dry completely.

  • Choose an interior/exterior spray paint in any color. Spray paint the rattan chair starting with the top. Apply 3 to 4 thin coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry to the touch before applying another, usually 30 to 40 minutes.

  • Allow the chair to dry completely for an hour and then flip the chair over. Repeat the painting process with the bottom half of the chair.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use fine grit sand paper to sand out any drip marks created during spraying. Lightly sand the drip mark and touch up with a fine-tip brush.
