How to Find Medical Transcription Training Near You
The medical transcription career field is projected to grow 14 percent by 2016, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Medical transcription is a unique field in that you can work in a hospital, clinic or doctor's office, or work from home for companies large or small, or start your own company. Whatever your plan, the first step is finding medical transcription training near you.

1
Check out community colleges---many now offer associate degrees or certificates in medical transcription, along with their medical assistant programs. Associate degrees usually take two years to complete. Community colleges are, by definition, local, and many larger cities have several from which to choose. Search websites like community-college.org or findaschool.org. Find a community college in the yellow pages under "Schools," or ask someone you know for a recommendation.

2
Investigate vocational schools. Many schools that specialize in training for allied health professions (healthcare professions other than medicine, dentistry or nursing---for instance, ultrasound technicians or medical assistants) have medical transcription training as well. Some court-reporting schools have expanded their curricula to include medical transcription courses. Local business schools might also offer certificates in medical transcription. Be aware of radio or TV ads announcing these programs, which will likely take less time to complete than a community college program.

Explore distance learning. The Internet has made the world smaller and decreased travel time. Medical transcription training near you may be as close as your laptop. Reputable online medical transcription training in the form of home study courses is plentiful and comprehensive, and may be just what you're looking for. Check out the websites in the Resources, below, to find an online course to fit your time and budget constraints. You may be able to complete a home study course in less time than it would take at either a vocational school or a community college.

Call local hospitals, clinics or doctor's offices if you cannot find other medical transcription training near you. While many facilities outsource their transcription work, there are still many who use in-house medical transcriptionists and who may provide training if you are hired. Alternatively, check out the local medical transcription companies that may be doing the work that local companies outsource---these transcription companies may also be willing to provide some on-the-job training if you are hired. Find these companies in the yellow pages under "Medical Transcription," or search on the web for "medical transcription companies [name of your city]."
