If squeezed or poked, acne cysts and nodules can turn into discolored areas on the skin or even scars. 1
Clean the skin gently by using a soap created for people with sensitive skin. Although it may seem logical to use a soap formulated for acne-prone or oily skin types, a gentle soap designed for sensitive skin should be used because acne nodules and cysts are usually inflamed and irritated. Lather the face well with the soap, then rinse the skin well with water. Use a gentle touch, and avoid scrubbing or rubbing the skin, which can make the condition worse. Clean the skin in this manner twice per day.

2
Medicate the skin correctly using a benzoyl peroxide cream that is the lowest concentration available, usually 2.5%. Many people think that they need to treat acne under the skin with a stronger benzoyl peroxide cream, but this can actually cause side effects, like peeling, redness, and burning, and can actually exacerbate acne. Using a dime-sized amount of a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide cream, spread it onto the skin gently, gliding the fingers over the skin until the cream has completely absorbed into the skin. Medicate the skin twice per day after cleansing.

Hydrate the skin lightly with an oil-free moisturizer designed for sensitive skin, which will moisturize the skin without irritating or clogging it. It is very important to moisturize the skin after using a benzoyl peroxide cream, so the skin will not become too dry. Even the lowest strength cream can be too drying on the skin without a moisturizer. When treating acne cysts and nodules, keeping the skin both medicated and hydrated will clear the skin much more rapidly than medicating it alone. Spread a dime-sized amount of the moisturizer onto the skin, gently smoothing it in. Moisturize the skin twice per day after treating it with the benzoyl peroxide cream.
