How to Change a Neptune Heating Element

Save

When the clothes in your Maytag Neptune do not seem to be drying it is probably due to a faulty heating element. The heating element in the Neptune is inside a tubular heat can assembly inside the dryer cabinet. You will need to remove the front panel to access the heat can. Replacement heating elements are available at most appliance repair shops.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Nut driver
  • Replacement heating element
  • Unplug the Maytag Neptune power cord from the electrical outlet. Open the dryer door and remove the four screws on the inside lip of the door opening with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Close the dryer door and grab the sides of the front panel. Pull the top of the front panel away from the dryer and lift up to disengage the bottom tabs.

  • Locate the wires for the door switch, lamp assembly and the moisture sensor bar. Press in on the locking tabs of the wiring harnesses that are connected to each component and pull the wiring harness away from the component.

  • Remove the four outer screws that secure the shroud and front tumbler assembly to the front of the dryer with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the shroud and front tumbler assembly away from the dryer. If necessary, use a nut driver to loosen the two top cover screws to allow the top cover to be raised slightly.

  • Grab the idler pulley below the tumbler with your hand and pull the idler pulley to the left and hold the pulley in that position. Use your free hand to pull the belt off of the motor pulley. Allow the idler pulley to go back to the right slowly. Lift up on the tumbler and pull both the tumbler and the belt out of the dryer.

  • Remove the single screw that secures the front of the heating enclosure to the base of the dryer with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the front of the heating enclosure from the dryer. Disconnect the heating element wires from the dryer by pulling them from the terminals with your fingers. Remove the two screws on the top of the enclosure that secure the heating element to the enclosure.

  • Pull the heating element out of the heating enclosure. You may have to twist it slightly to disengage the rear tabs. Slide the new heating element inside the enclosure and secure the element with the two retaining screws. Connect the heating element wires to the terminals by pushing the leads over the terminal ends with your finger.

  • Place the front panel of the heating enclosure back in the dryer and secure the front panel with the retaining screw. Lift up the tumbler and the belt and set them both inside the dryer.

  • Pull the idler pulley to the left and route the belt over the motor pulley and idler pulley. Slowly allow the idler pulley to go back to the right which will apply tension to the belt. Position the shroud and front tumbler assembly back over the front of the tumbler. Secure the shroud to the front of the side panels with the four retaining screws.

  • Set the bottom of the front panel into the lower tabs and press the top of the front panel over the side clips until the front is flush against the dryer. Open the dryer door and secure the front panel to the shroud with the four retaining screws. Close the dryer door and plug the Maytag Neptune back into the electrical outlet.
