How to Make a Craft Table

A craft table can make it easier to sew, scrapbook, make jewelry or do other crafts at home. Whether you have a devoted craft room or just a corner of the living room, a well-designed craft table is key to an organized and easy-to-use space. Build this simple craft table in just a weekend, using a combination of supplies from your local discount store and the home improvement store, adapting the dimensions and specifics to your needs and space.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 cube style bookcases
  • MDF (medium-density fiberboard)
  • 1-inch-by-4-inch lumber
  • Drill and bits
  • 1 3/4-inch wood screws
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint
  • Trim molding
  • Finish nails
  • Measure the space available for your craft table. Choose a spot that can hold a 36-inch-wide table, either against a wall or in the center of a room.

  • Purchase two cube-style shelving units. Look for units that are approximately 36 inches by 36 inches. Have the local home improvement center cut a sheet of MDF to the width of your shelving cubes by the length desired. Cut two 1-inch-by-4-inch boards to the same length.

  • Sand and paint the 1-inch-by-4-inch boards to match your shelving cubes for your bookshelf craft table. Do the same for the tabletop if you have opted for unfinished MDF. Paint the trim molding to match.

  • Assemble the shelving cubes for your cube craft table according to the manufacturer's directions.

  • Place the two cube shelving units with their backs facing, spread apart to create the length desired for your table. Screw the 1-inch-by-4-inch boards to the two shelving units, along the sides of each to form the supports for the top of your craft table.

  • Place the cut MDF on top of the shelving units and framing. Screw into place.

  • Use finish nails or a strong adhesive to attach trim molding around all four sides of your cube craft table.
