How to Build a Wooden Workout Bench

The wooden bench has a few advantages. Materials are cheaper and assembly is easier compared to building a metal bench. A weight bench may be assembled in a few hours and ready for use. They are perfect for the garage gym.

  • 4 planks, 2x4
  • 1 plank, 2x12

Instructions

  1. Material

    • 1

      Cut two beams from a 2 x 4 plank into 3-foot lengths. Mark one beam "A1" and the other beam "A2."

      Cut five beams from a 2 x 4 plank into 18-inches lengths. Mark the beams "B1", "B2," "B3," "B4 and "B5."

      Cut one length of 2 x 4 three feet long. Mark it "T1."

      Cut a 1-foot length of 2 x 4. Mark it "C1."

      Cut one beam 4 feet in length from a 2 x 12.Mark this beam "Z1."

    Assembly

      Attach A1 and B1 flush end together using three 3" drywall screws.

      Attach A2 and B2 flush end together using three 3-inch drywall screws.

      Attach "T1" to the tops of "B1" and to "B2" using two drywall screws on each end.

      Attach "B5" support beam underneath and at the center
      of "T1" using 3-inch drywall screws.

      Attach "C1" flush to "B3" and "B4."

      Attach one end of "Z1" on top of the C1 and B3-B4 assembly using three 3-inch drywall screws. Attach the other end of "Z1" to the center of "T1" using 3-inch drywall screws.

Tips & Warnings

  • When attaching the precut parts using drywall screws use a 1/8 inch drill bit to bore pilot holes into the wood for easy assembly.

  • Cut a V notch on beams A1 and A2 to cradle the barbell. The only requirements for the V notch is cut one inch deep with a 2 inch span at the top of each beam.

  • Prime the wood and paint it to maintain a long life for the bench.

  • The bench may be covered with foam padding to add comfort during exercises.

  • Always make a full inspection of the equipment before engaging it in any workouts. Should splits in the wood or broken parts that compromise the integrity of the unit be found, immediately repair the unit or discard it.
