How to Caulk a Bathtub Faucet

Caulk is a highly effective adhesive compound intended for sealing the seams of various household surfaces, most commonly in bathrooms and kitchens. The silicone- or latex-based sealant fills the joints surrounding plumbing fixtures, such as bathtub faucets. The purpose of caulk is to prevent leaks and other water damage. Caulking a bathtub faucet yourself can seem like a challenging process, but can be rather simple with the proper materials. All of the necessary equipment is available at hardware and home improvement stores.

Things You'll Need

• Non-ammoniated household cleaner
• Brush or cleaning pad
• Clean cloth
• Caulking gun
• Silicone or latex caulk
• Damp sponge

Instructions

1. Apply a non-ammoniated cleaner to the exposed seams surrounding the bathtub faucet. Scrub the area with a brush or cleaning pad, then dry it with a clean rag.

2. Use a caulking gun to apply a bead of caulk no more than 1/4-inch wide directly into a spot between the faucet and the wall of the bathtub.

3. Dampen your finger with a cloth or sponge to moisten it. Glide it along the seam in the bathtub, contouring the base of the faucet. Press the caulk evenly into the joint.

4. Wipe away any excess caulk around the faucet clean with a wet towel. Allow the caulk to cure overnight.
