How to Write a Formal Graduation Invitation
Before you order graduation invitations, it is important to know how to word a formal invite properly. Graduation invitations provide all the necessary information for guests about the graduate's achievements and accomplishments with commencement exercise details. Graduations are important milestones for many people, so it is important to word the invite formally to praise the graduate and celebrate this important event with class and proper etiquette.

1
Make a congratulatory statement at the beginning of the invitation. You can word the first statement in a variety of ways. Many parents often include their names with a congratulatory remark such as "Mr. and Mrs. Tim Smith are proud to announce the graduation of their daughter Elizabeth Atkins Smith." When schools print the invitations, they often include the name of the school at the beginning. An example of this wording is, "The senior class of Jefferson High announces the graduation of Elizabeth Atkins Smith."

2
Insert the graduate's full name after the congratulatory statement. Print the graduate's name in bold text on a separate line, in a larger font and centered so that it stands out. Even if the graduate makes her own invitations, it is important to include her full name. The wording for this type of inclusion on the invite would read, "I, Elizabeth Atkins Smith, am pleased to announce my graduation."

3
Place the name of the educational institution and the city or state of the institution after the graduate's name. Then, include the degree or field of study. The statement begins with the introduction line and would read, "I, Elizabeth Atkins Smith, am pleased to announce my graduation from Middleton University, California, Bachelor of Arts, English, Class of 2011." The invitation will read differently for a high school graduate, and it will be optional to include the graduate's major or field of study. The wording would read "Timothy Veer is proud to announce his graduation commencement ceremony at Lincoln High School, Class of 2012."

4
Include the time, date and place of the graduation ceremony following the educational information: "on Saturday, the twenty-second day of June two-thousand and eleven at six o'clock in the evening at Jefferson High auditorium." A formal invitation will include the time and date spelled out on the invitation, in the same fashion as a wedding invite.
-
5
Add any additional details about the graduate. This section is where you will want to include any special awards such as the dean's list or any scholarships. You will want to add a statement of praise at the end of the invitation such as "Elizabeth will be graduating with a 4.0 grade point average, and all of her hard work will finally pay off as she walks across the stage."
-
6
Write any important details at the end of the invitation. If a graduation party is being held, state "The graduation party will immediately follow the commencement ceremony at Washington County Park." Include the theme of the party, and let guests know what they will need to wear.
