How to Clean Wood Floors Environmentally

Wood floors are an attractive flooring option, and are found in many homes. As these types of floors can often be costly, it is important to care for and clean the floors properly, to prolong the beauty of the wood flooring. There are a large selection of retail floor cleaning products on the market, but most of these contain harsh chemical ingredients that can be harmful to our families and homes. Luckily, there are also a few natural cleaning ingredients that are most likely already in your kitchen pantry. Instead of using chemically-based products, use these inexpensive natural cleaners to keep your wood floors clean and free of bacteria.

Things You'll Need:

  • Dust mop
  • Mop
  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Vinegar
  1. Step 1

Wipe the floors with a dust mop as needed to collect loose dirt that has accumulated on the flooring, which can many times dull the appearance of the wood floors.

  2. Step 2

Pour a gallon of warm water into a cleaning bucket, as well as one-half cup of white vinegar. The vinegar works as an environmentally-friendly cleaner and disinfectant that will clean the floors, and also kill bacteria.

  3. Step 3

Dip a cleaning mop in the bucket, then twist out excess water.

  4. Step 4

Using the damp mop, wipe over the wood floors as you normally would.

  5. Step 5

Let floors air dry, and repeat once per week, or as needed to keep the floors clean and free of bacteria.
