How to Install a Drain for a Double Utility Sink

You have finished installing the double utility sink and are ready to install the sink drain plumbing pipes. The drain pipes for a double sink are very similar to a single sink drain. The difference is that the drains connect to each other using a "T" knuckle. You will need to purchase a double kitchen sink drain kit.       Lay out the pieces of your kitchen sink drain kit. There are two pieces that look similar to the letter "J" and a T-knuckle The two J-pieces fit onto the bottom of each drain basket with the short end on the basket and the long end toward the knuckle which joins the two at the middle of the sink.

      Fit the long ends of both J-pipes into the T-knuckle and dry fit the assembly to the bottom of the drains. If necessary, cut the long side of the J-pieces with a hacksaw to fit evenly. The assembly should line up directly under both drain baskets without being under stress.

      Wrap the threads of the two sink drain baskets with plumbers tape. Place two slip nuts on each end of the J-pipe with the threaded end of the slip nut pointed away from the pipe. Place the short side of the J-pipe under the drain basket and hand tighten the slip nut onto the drain.

      Slide the T-knuckle over the long end of the J-pipe. Push the second J-pipe into the T-knuckle and line up the short end under the opposite drain basket. Hand tighten the slip nut to the drain basket.

      Place slip nuts on each end of the pipe that goes into the drain pipe coming out of the wall. The threads of the nuts must point away from the ends of the pipe. Insert the sink drain pipe into the wall drain pipe. Position the long end of the sink trap over the end of the drain pipe and hand tighten the slip nut over the sink trap.

      Position the open sink trap end under the T-knuckle. Insert the tailpiece pipe into the T-knuckle and next to the sink trap. The tailpiece must fit into the sink trap 1 inch. Make a mark on the tailpiece where the pipe needs to be cut.

      Cut the tailpiece according to your mark with a hacksaw. Place slip nuts over each end of the tailpiece with the threads pointing away from the ends. Insert the tailpiece into the T-knuckle and the sink trap. Hand tighten both slip nuts.

      Use channel lock pliers to tighten all the slip nuts evenly that connect the entire system.
