How to Make Pillow Stuffing

Pillow stuffing doesn't always have to be purchased in the store. Decorative pillows in particular can be stuffed with a variety of recycled materials enabling the crafter to both create a beautiful project and to recycle materials that might otherwise be thrown away. By utilizing items such as an old mattress sponge or craft sponge remnants, or by cutting fabric strips and scraps into small pieces, the crafter can make pillow stuffing in a very economical way for pillow projects.

Instructions

  1. Sponges

    • 1

Cut, with the scissors, the sponge into pieces no bigger than 2 inches wide by 2 inches long. Shape is of no importance.

    • 2

Fill the pillow form or pillowcase with the cut pieces of sponge.

    • 3

Cut more sponge scraps until the pillow is filled to the desired level.

    Fabric Scraps

    • 4

Cut fabric strips or scraps to a size no larger than 2 inches wide by 2 inches long.

    • 5

Fill the pillow form or pillowcase with the cut pieces of fabric.

    • 6

Cut more the fabric scraps or strips if necessary until the pillow form or case is filled to the level of stuffing desired. Fabric filling in pillows is usually heavier than any other form of stuffing and is not a comfortable alternative for stuffing sleeping pillows, but serve decorative pillow projects well.

    Old Sweaters or Socks

    • 7

Cut old sweaters or old socks into small pieces about 2 inches wide by 2 inches long. Wool sweaters make an ideal stuffing because the pile is fluffier and soft.

    • 8

Fill the pillowcase with the cut pieces of sweater or socks.

    • 9

Cut more sweater or sock scraps until the pillow is filled to the desired level.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using a combination of cut sponge, cut fabric scraps and any commercially purchased pillow stuffing or cotton is also a viable alternative to stuffing any decorative pillow project. Combination pillow stuffing is not usually a very comfortable stuffing for any kind of pillow intended for sleep use, but throw pillows, couch pillows and any sort of decorative pillow projects are served well by these recycling pillow stuffing ideas.

My new sheets came folded into a rectangle and placed in a bag made with the same material. I stuffed the bag with plastic grocery bags and basted the bag shut. It is a comfortable matching pillow. I just thought I'd pass along the idea of using the plastic bags because we all have them, but more importantly, the pillow is soft and comfortable. Zhizara
