Since 1980, the Yamaha Golf-Car Company has produced a wide range of golf carts for personal and business use. All Yamaha Golf-Car carts possess a short three or four alphanumeric model number and longer model name to indicate various information about the cart, such as the production year, cart design or cart type. Basic reading of the short model number is not difficult, and with the serial number or model code, and a Yamaha reference chart, you can determine the exact production year of the cart.
Things You'll Need
- Golf cart
- Damp cloth
Locate the Yamaha golf cart serial number on your golf cart. Use a flashlight to help find and determine the model number if you do not know it, as both the serial number and its location can determine the short model number. If you can't read the serial number, rub away any dirt or debris with a damp cloth to reveal it, then write it down for future reference.
Serial number locations:
G1 models: Under the rear bumper on the square "cross member" of the frame.
G2 models (with production years between 1988 and 1990) and G9 models: Under the seat at the edge of floorboards in the engine compartment.
G2 models since 1990 and G3 models: Under the rear bumper cross member on the passenger's side.
G5 models: On the front cross member of the frame.
G8 models and G14, G16 and G19 models with a 1996 production year: Under the front seat on the passenger's side on a beam near the battery. Lift the seat to locate it.
G11, G14, G16, G19, G20, G21 and G22 models: Under the glove box on the driver's side front panel to the left--vertical orientation.
Find your serial number on the Yamaha Reference Chart (see Resources) to help determine your model number. As you can see on the chart, the first three digits of the serial number represent the "model code." The model code represents a separate designation attached to the serial number to reference back to the model number. This helps specify parts requirements and is often used as a stock-keeping unit (SKU) number.
To the left of the model code is the more specific and longer "model name." The first three or four units of the model name represent the short model number (see the green bar at the top of each category in the reference chart).
Read the model number. Each part of the model number means something specific.
- The first portion of the name indicates the type of Yamaha product. For example, "G" for Golf-Car.
- The number indicates the production lines approximate year and design--higher numbers indicating more current production models. For example, "G1" reads as a Yamaha Golf-Car (cart) produced between 1980 and 1986.
- The letter, "A" or E," following the number, indicates the type of cart--gas or electric. For example, "G21A" reads as a gas-powered, Yamaha Golf-Car design that was produced between 2001 and 2004.
