How to Kill Wasps That Are in Your House

Wasps will find their way into your home through openings, cracks, wall voids, door casings and attics. Often they will hibernate in the home during the cold winter months and emerge in the spring in large numbers. Most wasps, with the exception of the infamous yellow jacket, are not very aggressive, but they can deliver nasty stings if provoked. If you are allergic or have young children in the house, it's important to kill wasps in your house and prevent them from coming back. Killing wasps is pretty straightforward, though keeping them out of your house for good requires a little strategy. Does this Spark an idea?

Suck wasps up with a vacuum cleaner or hit them with a broom or fly swatter to kill them. "The easiest way to dispose of these insects found indoors is with a vacuum cleaner, broom or fly swatter," said professor of entomology at the University of Kentucky, Michael F. Potter, in an interview with the New York Times.

Potter goes on to say that wasps that have recently emerged from hibernation, those commonly found in the home, are particularly easy to kill because they are sluggish. Use caution when approaching .

Call a pest control specialist if you think you're dealing with yellow jackets, a type of wasp that is extremely aggressive and dangerous. Yellow jackets are smaller than other common wasps, such as paper wasps, but form huge colonies. You can identify yellow jackets by the yellow and black stripes on their bodies.

If you do find a nest in your house, spray the nest liberally with insecticide. Any wasp killing agent will do. Just make sure to wear several layers of clothing and protective gloves. According to Getridofthings.com, "most wasp poisons kill on contact, but it's best to be safe by slowly leaving the area, as sudden movements can attract attention."

    • 5

Spray the eaves of your house with insecticide. The best times to do this are early to mid-April and early fall. Spray any nests thoroughly with standard wasp-killing insecticide to prevent wasps from reproducing in your home. These will keep wasps away for several weeks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wasps are beneficial to the ecosystem and consume many insects that are considered pests by humans. Don't kill wasps unless they are really posing a threat.

  • Use caution when dealing with insecticides. You should wear protective gloves and avoid inhaling any poisonous chemicals.

  • Do not stand under a nest while you spray it because the hornets will drop downward and may sting you.
