How to Prevent Breast and Colon Cancer While on Orlistat

According to information published in the August 2006 edition of Cancer Letters and from a public petition to the FDA, the common weight loss medication Orlistat may increase the risk of developing a number of different types of cancer, including breast and colon cancer. If you are currently using the medication for weight loss (under its brand names Xenical and Alli), there are some steps you can take to minimize your risk of developing these conditions while on Orilstat.

Instructions

    • 1

Decrease the amount of fat in your diet (limiting it to no more than 25 to 35 percent of total calories) to decrease your risk of developing breast and colon cancer. While the final word is not in on the link between a higher fat diet and the development of colon cancer, some studies have demonstrated a correlation, so you are better off limiting fat in your diet to prevent the potential risk. This means consuming a diet rich in fruits, grains, vegetables and lean protein, while avoiding overconsumption of saturated fat from animal meat and trans fats from a variety of sources.

    • 2

Maintain a normal weight through diet and regular exercise to help reduce the risk of developing both colon and breast cancers. This means engaging in at least four days of exercise per week, training at least 30 minutes at a clip. Ideally, you will want to perform at least moderate intensity exercise---something that elevates your hear trate while speeding up your breathing patterns. Any type of exercise will do, so choose something you enjoy, whether it is walking, jogging, cardio, strength training or something else. The important part is to just put in the required time.

    • 3

Consult with your doctor about lowering your dose of Orlistat or switching to another prescription weight control medication. While the link between Orlistat and cancer is not yet definitive, reducing your overall dose can help to minimize exposure to the potentially harmful ingredients while retaining some benefit to your weight loss goals.
