How to Replace a Front Door Lock With a Keyed Deadbolt

A deadbolt gives a door a firm security measure when a regular door lock is present. With the deadbolt, your door is less likely to be entered by a person with a screwdriver or a credit card, and kicking the door in is just too messy for most people, so a trespasser will normally just walk away. Installing a deadbolt lock is easier when one has been installed previously because all the holes have been made, and you just have to put the new parts in the places where their old counterparts were. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door and expose the latch-bolt faceplate and the strike-plate (the metal pieces on the side of the door and the door frame). Examine it to see if it and the strike-plate are damaged. If they are, you'll need to replace them. Follow Steps 2 and 3 to do so.

    • 2

Remove the two screws in the faceplate and take it off the door. Some faceplates will be connected to the latch- bolt. In such a case, you'll have to complete Steps 4 and 5 to remove the faceplate/latch-bolt assembly.

    • 3

Remove the two screws in the strike-plate and take it off the door frame.

    • 4

Remove the two screws in the inner side of the deadbolt and you can pull the two sides off the door.

    • 5

Pull the latch-bolt out of the door to strip the door completely of all the old deadbolt lock's components.

    • 6

Insert the new strike-plate on the door frame and put the new screws into it. You may need to place a piece of cardboard behind the strike-plate to buffer it so that it's tight in the frame.

    • 7

Install the latch-bolt. Apply lubricant and push it into the latch-bolt hole.

    • 8

Put the screws into the latch-bolt faceplate. Now the latch-bolt is secure.

    • 9

Position the key side of the deadbolt on the outside of the door and the knob side on the inside and push them together through the hole in the center of the latch-bolt. They will lock together when you've done it correctly.

    • 10

Insert the two long screws through the knob side of the deadbolt to finish the installation. Lock and the deadbolt and push and pull on the door to ensure that the deadbolt works properly.
