How to Check the Fuel System on Cars

Fuel is supplied to the fuel injection system of modern cars and light trucks by an electric fuel pump located in the fuel tank. Theses systems operate at high pressure and when the pump fails, or a fuel filter becomes clogged, engine performance problems can occur. Testing the fuel system requires the use of a fuel pressure tester. This inexpensive tester is available at local auto parts stores.

Locate the test port and remove the cap from the fitting. The test port is located under the hood on the fuel line or fuel rail near the injectors. The exact location varies by manufacturer and can be found in a service manual (see Resources section).

Relieve the pressure in the fuel system by first positioning a shop towel under the test port to absorb any spilled fuel and then depressing the valve in the test port. The fuel is under considerable pressure and eye protection should be worn at all times to prevent injury.

Install the tester onto the test port by selecting the appropriate adapter for the vehicle and screwing it onto the test port. Then attach the tester to the adapter using the quick disconnect fitting.

Turn the ignition key to the run position and then to off twice to prime the system. Then start the engine and read the fuel pressure. Compare this reading to the specifications located in your service manual. Many manufacturers have specifications for key on/ engine off operation as well as engine running. Be sure to check and compare both readings as instructed.
