How to Reduce Fat With Steam Saunas

Saunas have been used for thousands of years by the Romans, Scandinavians, and Russians, who all have recognized the health benefits of a good sweat. When used regularly and in conjunction with diet and exercise, the sauna can help reduce fat by speeding your metabolism and purging toxins from the body. The heat and steam cause the heart to work harder to circulate blood, which strengthens the heart. Your body burns calories to produce sweat, which is a crucial first step in order to reduce fat.

After exercising, take a few minutes to cool down and drink water. Take your towel and water bottle and enter the sauna. It is important to have on proper footwear such as sneakers or sandals, as the floor is often slippery. Lay your towel on the bench and sit upon it.

Allow your body to relax as the heat puts your muscles in a fever-like state. According to Mikkel Aaland, author of the book "Sweat," "Sitting in a sweat bath could be the most vigorous activity you've had all day. The heat produces an artificial 'fever' and urges every organ of the body into action. While outwardly relaxed, your inner organs are as active as though you were jogging or mowing the lawn." Take deep breaths from the bottom of your abdomen and exhale slowly, and drink steadily from your water bottle.

Dab at the sweat that should be falling steadily from your body. At this point, if you feel comfortable, stand and do some light stretching to relieve your muscles from the workout they had earlier. Using your clock or watch, exit the sauna at the end of 20 minutes. Drink at least 16 ounces of water to rehydrate your body.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Saunas are not a tool for weight loss by themselves. They are an aid in helping to promote weight loss in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise program.

    • If using the sauna in a hotel or gym, check with the regulation for proper attire. While some saunas allow guests to be nude, others don't.

    • Always drink water before, during, and after the sauna.

    • Never stay in the sauna longer than 20 minutes.

    • Women who are pregnant should not use a sauna.
