How to Make Organic Soaps Using Glycerin

Glycerin is a byproduct of lye soap formation, but it is also obtained organically from vegetables and plants. Some examples include canola and coconut oils. Glycerin-based soap bars can be handmade with some simple processes and supplies. These soaps can be customized for color and scent to make holiday and birthday gifts.

Things You'll Need

• Glycerin soap base or other source of glycerin
• Double boiler or microwave-safe bowl
• Essential oils
• Organic soap additives
• Spoon
• Food coloring
• Mold

Instructions

1. Melt the glycerin base in a double boiler or in a bowl in the microwave according to package directions.

2. Stir in additional items with a spoon to customize the soap. Oatmeal, lavender, and orange oil are common individual additives.

3. Add food coloring for variety or decoration.

4. Pour the liquid glycerin mixture into molds and let them harden overnight. Premade soap molds may be purchased at craft stores, but any container that holds hot liquids can be used as a mold, for example solid wood squares, PVC pipes, candy molds or ceramic brownie pans.

5. Wrap the hardened soap in plastic wrap to prevent cracking and moisture absorption.

Tips & Warnings

• Many add-ins can be used in glycerin soap. Shea butter for softening, castor oil for sudsing, dried flowers for decoration, and organic herbs for scent and decoration are just some of the options for expanding this basic soap recipe.

• Remember not to use aluminum molds, unless they are specifically made for soap molding, because aluminum will rust with continued use.
