How to Upgrade to American First Class

If you are traveling via air within the United States, there is a chance you may be on an American Airlines flight. Typically, American Airlines flights have several different seating classes, ranging from coach (or economy) to business class and even first class. Although you typically have to purchase a business- or first-class ticket to get a seat in those parts of the plane, it is possible to upgrade your flight after the fact and possibly even save some money in the process.

1. Book a flight that is going to depart early in the morning. These flights are less likely to be filled, which increases your chances of upgrading your seat.

2. Show up early to check in for your flight. Waiting until the last minute to check in is not going to help your chances of upgrading your seat.

3. Approach the American Airlines agent when he isn't busy. If it's a hectic time, the agent most likely isn't going to help you out.

4. Ask nicely if you can upgrade your seat. It is important to have a great attitude. Customer service agents are less likely to help up someone who is demanding.

5. Present your frequent flyer miles membership card if you have one. These cards alone might have enough to upgrade you for free or at least a discounted price

6. Tell the American Airlines agent where you work. Being the head of a nonprofit organization or an individual who works in a company that partners with American Airlines may allow you to upgrade your seat.
