How to Dispute Information on Equifax

A credit score determines your eligibility for loans and credit cards. If you don't keep track of your credit score, you may find inaccuracies on your report. Equifax is one of the three main report agencies that keeps track of your credit history. Equifax has a process where you can dispute an inaccurate credit mark on your record. It's important to remove inaccuracies, because it can lead to higher interest rates or the inability to secure any type of credit including a mortgage.

Instructions

1. Use the Resource link to download and print the dispute form. The form is required by Equifax to dispute any inaccuracies on your credit report.

2. Fill out the form with all the necessary information. The form asks for your personal information and your credit account number. Ensure you check the box that indicates why the report is inaccurate. These include "Not Mine," "Paid" and "Account Transfer."

3. Call Equifax or send the form through the mail. The second Resource link has the phone number for Equifax and the mailing address. At this point, the dispute process begins. Equifax begins an investigation into the issue.

Tips & Warnings

• It can take up to 60 days for Equifax finishes the dispute resolution. Equifax will send you a report and update in the mail once the dispute process is over.
