Instructions

    • 1

Whether you are looking for a dramatic change or want to darken hair gradually, make sure the color you choose will look good with your skin tone. Blondes usually have lighter skin tones than brunettes, so test hair swatches (usually found near the dye at the store) against your skin before picking out the color. Remember, if you are a natural blonde, the final color might turn out a bit lighter than it appears in the swatch.

    • 2

Follow the mixing direction for the dye you choose. Mixing instructions can vary by brand and type, so read and follow the mixing information carefully. Wear gloves while mixing to protect your hands.

    • 3

Divide hair into quartered sections with a comb. Part each section by starting in the front and pulling the comb back towards the nape of the neck. Clip each section off until ready to dye.

    • 4

Apply hair to each section starting at the scalp, while wearing gloves. Pull the mixture down through strands with your fingers. Make sure each section is completely saturated with dye, then apply remaining dye to the hairline.

    • 5

Leave dye on hair for the time specified in the directions. Often times, the directions will give a time range, such as 10-15 minutes. Check the color by wiping a small section of hair clean with fingers after the shorter time. If the desired color hasn't been reached, leave the coloring on until all of the time is up.

    • 6

Remove dye mixture from hair by rinsing with lukewarm water. Continue to rinse until the water running form hair is clear.

Tips & Warnings

  • After coloring use shampoos and conditioners for color treated hair. These products are intended to keep hair color from fading. Some home hair coloring kits come with deep conditioners to help repair damage caused by the coloring process. If the kit you chose did not come with a deep conditioner, consider using a separate conditioning product immediately after completing step 6.

  • Always color hair in a well ventilated area.

  • See dye package for additional concerns and warnings.
