How to cover small amounts of gray hair
As we age, our hair starts to turn gray. Some people start to get a small amount of gray hair as early as their twenties, but most people will notice gray hair in their forties. Gray hair can make you look older. When you first start turning gray, you will have a few gray strands throughout your hair and at the sides of your head. If you are a man, your beard may start to get some gray hairs as well. Almost anything goes with hair color these days, so you can be adventurous and try something new. Highlight your hair to cover small amounts of gray. Adding lighter strands of blonde or gold hair through out will brighten your hair and disguise the gray. You can buy highlighting kits in the beauty section of most stores. Highlighting your hair is fairly easy to do, just follow the directions on the kit. If you are uncomfortable highlighting your hair on your own, go to a professional stylist.

Add lowlights (darker strands) to your hair, focusing on covering the gray hairs. When you lowlight your hair, your hair is dry so you will be able to see the gray strands and cover them with a darker color. Choose a color that is either close to yours or one that is completely different to add dimension. You can lowlight your hair yourself with a kit from the store, or ask a salon stylist to do it for you.

Get a hair weave. A hair weave is done by a hair stylist who will add two or more colors to your hair. She will add lowlights and highlights interspersed with your original hair color. Any gray hairs will blend right in and not be noticeable.

Wash your hair with a semi-permanent hair color. Semi-permanent hair colors last anywhere from two to eight weeks. You can either find a color to match your original hair color or change the color slightly to brighten up your face. If you want to have a slightly darker color or add some auburn tones, a semi-permanent hair color is a great way to try it. The color slowly fades out of your hair with each shampoo.

Use a permanent hair color to color all of your hair. Try to match your color so that your roots will not be visible.

Use a root touch-up kit to cover gray roots. Purchase a permanent or semi-permanent hair color that matches your current hair color to cover your roots. There is a small brush in the kit that enables you to brush the color on just the roots.

Use hair mascara to cover gray hair strands. Hair mascara washes out with each wash, so if you don't like it, just wash your hair. You can choose colors such as copper or bronze to add depth to your hair. Brush the mascara on the gray hairs from root to end, using the wand that is included.

Cover gray hair in your beard with a root touch-up kit or hair mascara. Both root touch-up kits and hair mascara will work for gray in your beard. Just brush the color onto your gray hair.
