How to Glaze a Window Sash
Window sashes are glazed to keep cold air out in the winter and to keep cool air from escaping from your home in the summer. The products and tools are available in home remodeling centers so that you can glaze your own windows. Remove the old glazing before applying new glazing. To remove the glazing, use your putty knife to scrape it out of the window sash. Sometimes it is hard to remove the old glazing just by scraping alone. Use a heat gun to soften the glazing for easier removal.

Different types of glazing are available. Purchase latex glazing in a tube and oil-based glazing in a tub. The better product to use is the oil based-glazing compound. It will cure in 7 to 14 days. Latex glazing compounds can take several weeks. Glazing compound must cure enough to paint it. Create a rope out of the oil based-glazing compound, and press it into the sash or the exact same place you removed the old glazing from.

Use your putty knife to smooth the glazing compound into the grooves all the way around the window. Do not leave any gaps between the glaze and the windowpane. Your putty knife must remain clean to keep from dragging the glaze back out of the sash. If you keep your putty knife clean and dip it into mineral spirits, your glaze will have a smooth professional look.

Carefully cut away the excess glaze between the sash and the windowpane. You can accomplish this by using your putty knife to cut along the edge of the sash where it meets the windowpane and pushing the excess putty onto the glass. Scrape off the excess glaze without disturbing the glaze in the sash. Repeat these steps for all your windows.
