Do a Coolant Flush

For your engine to stay at the proper operating temperature, the coolant needs to be working as it should. As time goes on, the coolant breaks down and becomes diluted with contaminants. A coolant flush will fix this and keep your engine from break down

Things You'll Need

  • New Antifreeze
  • Drain Pan/bucket
  • Water hose

Instructions

MAKE SURE THE ENGINE IS COOL BEFORE YOU BEGIN! The first thing to do is drain the system. On the bottom of the radiator there is a drain plug. It's usually a butter fly nut. Let all the old antifreeze drain from the radiator. Then undo the lower radiator hose from that radiator to get an extra coolant out. Now put the nut and hose back on.

Fill the radiator up with pure water from your garden hose and turn the car on with the heater on max. Leave the car running until it reaches the normal operating temperature. Turn of the car and drain the radiator again.

    • 3

Wait about 10 minutes and once again fill the radiator with water. Start the engine and run it for a few minutes. Now drain the water and inspect it. If its clean, your done. If not, you need to repeat this step until it is clean.

Now fill your system back up with antifreeze. Antifreeze should be mixed 50/50 but you can buy it premixed from the store. Leave the radiator cap off and go turn the car on. Leave it running for a minute or so and then turn the heat on max. Put the radiator cap back on and your good to go! After a few days of driving, I suggest rechecking your coolant level.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a funnel to poor in the new antifreeze

  • Coolant cannot be pored down the sink or put into the garbage! You can take it to an auto parts store and they will dispose of it properly!
