Google launched its free Gmail service in 2004. Over the years since that time, the search engine giant added built-in chat to its web-based email client and support for mobile devices. At the end of 2010, Gmail had almost 200 million users. Signing up for a free account takes only minutes.

Turn on your computer. Navigate to the Google Gmail website at gmail.com.
Click on the red "Create an Account" button in the upper right corner of the screen.
Fill out the information on the form. Google asks you to enter your name, a login name of your choice, password, security question and answer, and optional secondary email in case you forget your password or login name. If the login name you choose is taken choose another or pick one of the recommendations.
Agree to the terms of service and type in the security verification. Click on "I accept. Create my account".
