Slouching in class will keep you from staying awake.

The subject matter in your class is particularly boring today, and you haven't been getting enough sleep lately. You find yourself leaning your head in your head, and slowly, but surely ... you start to nod off in class. To prevent this from happening in the first place, or to perk yourself up in the middle of getting sleepy, you'll have to try a few methods that will help.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a good night's sleep. Try to get about eight hours of sleep a night -- or at least six or seven. If you get enough sleep at night you will probably not be tired in class unless you are really bored. If homework keeps you up late, try to do some of it in-between classes or at lunch or other times when you have a little extra time.

    • 2

Try to keep busy. If you keep busy in class you are less likely to fall asleep. Work on homework or assignments, take notes even if you don't need them, draw a picture or write something. If you are supposed to be doing something in school be sure to do it and follow the teacher's instructions. Don't do things you are not supposed to be doing -- just things that will alert your brain while you're in class.

Eat a healthy meal or snack. If you get some energy into your body, it will be easier to stay awake in class. Eat some fruit, a sandwich or a protein bar. And don't forget to start your day with a healthy breakfast.

If you have a medical condition like insomnia or other sleep disorder, talk to your doctor about things you can do to help. Your doctor will probably have some good advice.

    • 5

Take naps in-between classes or other times when you have a few minutes. Even if you nap for 20 minutes at lunch or in-between classes, it could help boost your energy. Don't sacrifice a meal though unless you are really tired, as healthy food can boost your energy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sleep well the night before.

  • Have a healthy breakfast.

  • Don't skip class or sleep during class as this can get you into trouble with school.

  • If you decide to take a nap in-between classes or during lunch, make sure you wake yourself up with an alarm, such as on your cellphone.
