Be very patient, dogs give a lot of signs you just have to watch for them. Lets start in the morning. Let your dog sleep in a kennel / crate all night long, if it is sized properly they should not use the restroom in it. As soon as you get out of bed in morning, place your dog on a leash, grab a few treats, and take outside to the designated potty area.

When your dog finally potties, which in the beginning could be a while, praise the potting while the dog is pottying. I say "good potty" or something along those lines making sure to use the word potty several times in a positive way. After a while they will associate the word potty with using the restroom. After the dog is done pottying, give a treat, pet, praise, or whatever your dog likes.

After meals, dogs have to use the restroom about 30 minutes after a meal. After breakfast I kennel the dog because I can not dedicate all my time watching for the potty signs (sniffing the ground a lot and turning in circles while sniffing), because I have to get ready for work. After dinner, I place the dog on the leash and hold on to it or hook the leash to the table while I am making our dinner, this will keep them close and you can keep an eye on them for their signs.

In the beginning I always take them out on a leash. This shows them the part of the yard where they should be using the restroom in and keeps them from getting distracted and getting business done.

Tips & Warnings

  • Close off room in the house, keeping the dog confined to the room you are in this way you can keep a close eye on them.

  • Another thing to keep in mind is dogs do not have accidents, we do! We did not bring them outside when they needed to go.

  • If you do not catch them in the act of pottying inside there is nothing you can do, just clean it up and hope you catch the next time.

  • If you catch them in the act, tell them "NO" and bring them outside to their area as quickly as possible.

  • Go get some pet stain remover accidents will happen.
