How to Measure Linear Feet for a Backsplash

A backsplash is a washable surface behind and above a sink or stove that protects a wall from liquid splashes. You can find great variety in the designs and materials available for making your backsplash. Typical materials include ceramic tiles, wooden or plastic planks, stainless steel and washable wallpaper. If the material you are going to use for a backsplash is sold by linear feet, for example in sheets, it's important to measure the backsplash area in those units as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the backsplash area with a measuring tape or ruler.

    • 2

Convert the area length and width into feet. Note that these dimensions might be measured in meters or inches. If you are using meters, multiply the numbers by 3.280839895. If your measurements are in inches, divide values by 12. For example, the wall area you're measuring is 120 by 72 inches. These values are converted to 10 (120 / 12) feet and 6 (72 / 12) feet.

    • 3

Multiply the length by width to calculate the size in square feet. In the example given, the wall area is 10 feet by 6 feet, 10 x 6, which equals 60 square feet.

    • 4

Measure the width of, or obtain from a product description, a sheet of material you plan to use for making your backsplash. Typically, you will get this parameter in inches.

    • 5

Divide the width (in inches) of the material sheet by 12 to calculate it in feet. For example, a material-sheet width of 9 inches converts to 0.75 (9 / 12) feet.

    • 6

Divide the area in square feet (Step 3) by the material width (Step 5) to calculate the length in feet of a material sheet needed to make a backsplash. In our example, the backsplash length is 60 square feet / 0.75 feet = 80 feet.
