How to Bybass Web Filters

There are many reasons why a website may be blocked by an Internet content filter. Bypass the filter and accessing a blocked site can cause trouble for you at your job, school or where ever you are trying to bypass the Internet security. If you feel that you really need to get around a content filter, there are a few steps you can take that will help you get to the site you are looking for.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to OperaMini.com (see References). This site demos the Opera Mini browser by emulating it on a phone. Since this is a fully working browser, you will be able to enter the address of just about every site you wish to see. If you find the browser too small, you can look to other tools.

    • 2

Open Google Translator and enter the URL of the page you wish to visit. In the selection box "Translate from," select English. Choose English from the "Translate to" box as well. Click on "Translate" and Google will translate the page for you while acting like a proxy server, allowing the page to be displayed despite the content filter.

Many schools block translation services so this may not work in all settings.

    • 3

Type the address of a proxy server into your browser's address bar. If the proxy server has been blocked, try another on your list. When you have a working proxy server, enter the URL of the Web site you are trying to access and have the proxy display the page for you. Many filters learn the addresses of proxies so one that works one day, may be blocked the next.

    • 4

Search for your site using Google. Instead of clicking on the link to the site, click on the link that reads "Cached." This will bring up an older version of the page, but it generally works.

Tips & Warnings

  • Proxy servers change addresses often because filters learn what their URL's are. You will need to keep an updated list of proxies.

  • Bypassing content filters can cause you a great deal of trouble. If you are caught violating an Acceptable Use Policy you can face tough consequences.

  • Some sites are blocked because they contain malware. Be careful that you do not bring malicious software into your organization's network from a blocked site.
