How to Stop Cataracts in Canines
Dogs can develop cataracts, too. Certain breeds are more prone to cataracts, so watch your dog's eyes if he is at elevated risk. Cataracts develop when eye tissue begins to harden and scar, causing blindness or severely reduced vision. Surgery is an option, but nonsurgical methods might work, too. You can stop cataracts from forming or reverse some of the effects by using these methods.

1
Purchase prescription eye drops from your veterinarian; they give the eyes nutrients, and carnosine can improve vision in dogs. Although expensive, the drops put medicine directly into the dog's eyes and can reduce cataract thickness.

2
Give your dog the best dog food, and add supplements. Vitamins E and C are especially good because they benefit the eyes. You can purchase regular gel caps at a health-food store and mix them with your dog's food. Adjust the dosage according to his weight. Beta carotene is another supplement that nourishes the eyes.

Don't let your dog play during the hottest part of the day. Sunlight has a strong effect on cataract formation. Take your dog for walks at night, or when the sunlight isn't as strong.

Tips & Warnings
By using nonsurgical techniques to stop cataracts, you can avoid surgical complications that might arise, such as infection and vision loss.
These treatments might not work for all dogs. Consult a veterinarian if your dog's vision has not improved.
