You will not always get the scent of your choice, but you will be able to collect a small collection of perfumes that will allow you to experiment with scent. Best of all, these samples mostly will be free. But do consider making a purchase at some point. The whole point of free samples is to encourage you to buy.

1. Visit department store beauty counters. If there is a certain scent you are interested in trying, a beauty consultant will be glad to give you a sample. Do not be disingenuous by acting like you are going to buy a perfume when you do not have the intention to do so. This wastes the consultant's time. Just ask for a sample.

2. Search through old beauty magazines. The big fashion magazines like Vogue are full of perfume samples. You can find old magazines at yard sales and through online city listings.

3. Request samples online. Some companies ask you to fill out an online form and will send you a free sample. Such is the case with designer clothier Lacoste. On the company website, you can choose one of the company's scents for men or women.
