How to Recharge a Butane Lighter
While many lighters use a liquid propellant to create a flame, other lighters use butane, which is a gas. Refilling liquid-fuel lighters is generally an easy process, as the liquid flows into the lighter with few problems. Butane lighters are more difficult to fill, as the qualities of the gas may present some difficulties if you don't transfer it correctly. You can continue to use your butane lighter by recharging the butane gas.

1
Flip the lighter over so the bottom is facing up. You will see the fuel nipple and the flame-adjustment screw on the lighter.
-
2
Insert a small screwdriver in the flame adjustment screw and turn it fully to the right. This sets the flame control to the minimum.
-
-
3
Press the screwdriver into the fuel nipple to release any air in the gas-storage area. Removing the air makes it easier to place butane in the lighter.
-
4
Line up the butane-can nozzle so it matches with the fuel nipple. The butane can should always be held upside down to facilitate transferring the gas to the lighter.
-
5
Press down on the butane can to release the gas into the lighter.
-
6
Release the can after approximately five seconds, then repeat the process for a shorter duration to ensure the lighter is full.
-
7
Set the lighter down and allow it to sit for several minutes. When the gas is transferred to the lighter, it becomes very cold. Letting the lighter sit allows the gas to return to room temperature, making it easier to light.
-
8
Insert the screwdriver into the flame-adjustment screw and turn it slightly to the left to test the flame height.
-
9
Continue to turn the flame adjustment screw until the desired flame height is achieved.
